The first round of interviews have been done for the RED Zone summer team and these candidates are going to be creating their own blogs and online personalities for everyone to browse! To those people and to anyone else interested in blogging, social media, or just getting their name out there here are some good ideas and some bad ideas when it comes to branding yourself and your blog.
Good Idea - Have an eye catching profile picture, something people will take notice of and help you to brand yourself.
Bad Idea - No profile picture. You know what accounts don't have profile pictures? Temp/Spam accounts and no one wants to add them.
Good Idea - Have a snappy title, something people can remeber. Keep in mind the KISS principle.
Bad Idea - Avoid The Fiona Apple Style 23 Word Long Titles That Tell You Every Single Topic You Would Like To Cover EVER.
Good Idea - Have a 'thing', like a distinctive style or schtick; something you always include. You may have to go through a few 'things' until you hit the right one, that's okay.
Bad Idea - Have a 'thing' that no one gets like inside jokes, or something offensive. If you're writing for say, the RED Zone, your 'thing' should not be "that's what she said."
Good Idea - Have a primary focus or theme, something you can plan around and build on. You'll be able to find an audience and keep them.
Bad Idea - Write about everything in life. Literally. You may gain a following, but you won't be able to target you're audience or to build on anything by constantly changing what you write about.
Good Idea - Be consistent. Have a schedule and stick to it. You have to show you're serious to be taken seriously and consistently updating helps you build trust with your audience. Plus they know when to check for new content. You can even tell people your publishing schedule so they don't have to figure it out on their own.
Bad Idea - Post whenever the mood strikes you. Obviously your followers should will see a method in your madness. Or they'll quit checking.
Good Idea - Write what you know. You'll sound informed and sincere and more like you.
Bad Idea - Make stuff up. I would love to write a travel blog, but would anyone like it? No, becuase I've never travelled.
What else is there? What have you learned that works or doesn't work? Social Media is about sharing, so never be shy!
