Social Media & Me

Social Media
When I first started to use Social Media I thought is was a bit of a joke. Facebook is just a tool to learn things about people you have a crush on. Twitter is a way to update the world on what you had for breakfast. Blogging was a way to make yourself feel important. Once I started to really utilize these tools, I realized Social Media is so much more than that. Here's a few things I've discovered...
1.Social Media is not planned
I have tried to plan viral posts. I have tried to plan specific strategies to get info across. However I cannot plan how people will respond, interpret and share on social media. This isn't a bad thing either; social media is a living entity, and the fun of social media is that you can't plan for something to go viral. You can hope and dream and often be surprised but you can't control it and the more you try the less you will succeed.
2. Social Media is it's own community
I originally thought that Social Media was just to be used within an already established community as another outlet for sharing or connecting. As I already belong to at least one community, I thought an online presence would be an extension of that, but it's not really. Social Media is like international waters; you can't say who exactly belongs to what, or what standards govern it. Everyone gets their say in social media, that's why it's so awesome.
3. Social Media can be done wrong
This is probably the most important thing I've learned and something that most people who use it are guilty of. The purpose of social media is not to tell people what you had for breakfast, or to broadcast to the world that you are bored however the masses seem to think that's all you do and I was there once too. Social Media is an opportunity to reach an audience you probably couldn't reach in person. Social Media is a means of learning and growth; it's collaborative and dynamic. The people using it to update you on their every move are the ones giving social media a bad name.
Words of Advice:
"When you're not busy drawing penises on your friends or making thinly-veiled death threats as your Facebook status, always remember that your mom is probably on Facebook, as well as your employer."
