Let me Twitterfy!

In case you've never noticed, I love Twitter.  I've definitely talked about this before!  Twitter is a big part of my job and something I really like doing.  I like it so much that I was actually asked to help train some students at York University on how to use it!  That's really cool to me, especially because I wouldn't consider myself an expert or anything (just a huge fan.)

If you're not into Twitter I feel like you haven't properly experienced it.  Yes people post some really stupid things, and yes some people spam you, and yes some people write completely unintelligibly because you're limited to how much you can post at a time! But there are a lot of accounts out there posting valuable information and many companies using it as a way to connect with customers, and sometimes there are just some very funny, witty and intelligent people tweeting great things.

To help you get started, I'll let you take a look at the presentation I made about Twitter,  connect with me if you'd like some more info!  It's primarily directed at using Twitter for a club or organization (in my case student service departments) but it's got some good tips on getting yourself out there (if that's what you're looking for!) And definitely follow me when you start using it!

And the winners are....

*Drumroll please*.......

Natalia Toussaint and Alex Truong!!!

Congratulations!!  I had some other great entries but both Natalia and Alex scored perfect! Thanks to everyone who sent in answers! Here are the answers to my 'So You Think You Know YorkU' quiz.

So You Think You Know YorkU?

Monday, March 26th was York University's 53rd birthday!  In honour of the occasion I agreed to write a blog about the history of YorkU and what better way to tell you about York than with a pop quiz! Email your answers to redzone@yorku.ca by Friday and I'll give away a York T-Shirt to the best score!
Now let's see just how much you know about York...

The RSA Chronicles: Christina

So I know I said I wasn't blogging twice a week anymore because I'm so busy BUT I reeeeally wanted to write this blog.  RED Zone Student Ambassadors (RSA's) are some pretty awesome people and we all have some pretty cool stories.  I wanted to share the story of Christina, a former RSA (2008-2010).  Christina's RED Zone experience led her down an awesome path...

Don't You Know Who I Am?

When I was elected McLaughlin College Council President, my favourite phrase was 'don't you know who I am?'  I figured that since I had been so actively involved in my college and in my residence people would just recognize my greatness.  My bubble burst a little bit when I went to the Master's Office for the first time since the election and the receptionist called me "Eden", which, in case you hadn't realized it, is not even close to my name (which is Claire... how do you not know that yet?)  It was at this time that I realized it wasn't enough for me to just show up to events and smile and make sure things went smoothly.  I needed to meet and connect with people and let them know what I was about if I really wanted to make the most of my time.  I share this with you because it's almost summer which can mean one of two things: either you're looking for a summer job or you're getting ready to graduate and will need a real job. So let's talk about networking and promoting yourself...

Update on my life!

Alright so remember when I wrote my blog about balancing everything in my life and sometimes having to prioritize my assignments and stuff? Now is one of those times.  Work is getting really busy (we're organizing training for the summer RSA's!) and I'm thisclose to being done school (which means a millions essays and tests) so I'm cutting down my blogging to once a week.  I know you're disappointed and probably asking yourself if you can survive not reading my posts twice a week, but I'll be on twitter if you're going through withdrawals!  As a special Friday treat, here's a video I did for York, encouraging you to take summer classes!
(Feel free to make fun of me, I am by no means an actor)
Love,
Claire

Introducing Your Potential RED Zone Student Ambassadors!

So as I'm sure you all know, the RED Zone has been going through the arduous process of assembling a crack team of students to welcome all of York's incoming students this summer.  In the past we've received over 400 applications for 3 positions!  This year, to help highlight the strengths we're looking for (and so I didn't have to go through 400 resumes again) we had applicants fight to the death! Just kidding, that's the Hunger Games (which I'm obsessed with.) We had our applicants show us that they could be as awesome and outgoing online as they were in person.  So without further ado, I present to you our tributes potential RED Zone Student Ambassadors!

Good Idea, Bad Idea

The first round of interviews have been done for the RED Zone summer team and these candidates are going to be creating their own blogs and online personalities for everyone to browse!  To those people and to anyone else interested in blogging, social media, or just getting their name out there here are some good ideas and some bad ideas when it comes to branding yourself and your blog.

Wherefore Art Thou Social Media?

Social Media is constantly evolving, I mean in the 6 years I've had Facebook I feel like I've gone through at least 300 different 'new looks', and with this constant evolution comes a pretty amazing rate of growth (consider books, they've been around for how many years and  there are only so many different ways you can present a book.)  New platforms for the social media savvy student seem to pop up overnight. It can get pretty overwhelming! What platform should I use, how should I use it, and what should I use it for?  All of these questions ran through my mind when I started blogging, and here are some of the platforms I considered...

Classes, and Work, and Parties! Oh my!

This Friday I asked the twitterverse what they would like to read about on my blog and I got a really awesome response. GL0RIANG asked: "how you juggle [Full Time] school with uneasy courses and work! and friends..and family..and yourself."  This is something everyone has or will encounter in university, and everyone has their own strategies.  For me, these are a few things I have found that work.

Social Media & Me

When I first started to use Social Media I thought is was a bit of a joke.  Facebook is just a tool to learn things about people you have a crush on.  Twitter is a way to update the world on what you had for breakfast.  Blogging was a way to make yourself feel important.  Once I started to really utilize these tools, I realized Social Media is so much more than that.  Here's a few things I've discovered...

Home is Where the Heart Is!

So it's Reading Week at York University and instead of staying at my tiny apartment and cleaning and playing video games (I lead a very exciting life outside of school and work) I decided I'd come home to see my parents.  I was literally back in the area for under an hour before I ran into my high school physics teacher.  Which is kind of cool because he recognized me! I took his class like 8 years ago I think?  Yeah, plus I sucked at physics (hence the English major.) Anyways, I took a tour around town and went to my old Mall and old hangout spots (the Blue Water Bridge never gets old) and I'm just really enjoying being at home so I'm not writing a formal blog post, but I didn't want to leave anyone hanging.  So I hope everyone is having a great reading week or work week or school week or whatever kind of week it is you're having!  Also, don't forget to apply to work in the RED Zone! Apps are due Monday Feb 27th and that's literally around the corner! Email redzone@yorku.ca with completed apps or any questions (I'll make sure we check over the weekend.)
Love,
Claire
This is my cat, Josie.  I love her but she generally runs away from me.  She's fun to see when I come home.

That's What A Blog Is?

When I was given the task of creating my own blog I was incredibly nervous.  Not because I have nothing to blog about (I obviously have lots I would like to say.) No, I was nervous because I didn't really know what a blog was or what it did.  Okay, I knew BASCIALLY what a blog is (I'm not completely clueless) but I didn't think I had a good grasp of blogger culture.  I told my boss and he told me to think about blogs that I read, why do I read them, what keeps people coming back, etc.  Well this was extra perplexing; I replied that I don't read blogs.  Apparently I was wrong.  After a bit of guidance I discovered that I indeed did not really know what a blog was becuase I had been reading them without realizing it.  However, here's a list of some blogs I like and why.

Job Search 2012-2013

It's getting to be that time of year again: the weather is tempting us with a bit of sun and warmth, exams and final essays are looming overhead, and summer is so close but still so far away.  With all of this comes the first thoughts of summer jobs! For a lot of us, finding a summer job is almost a full time job in itself! I remember the nerve wracking applications, cover letters, and interviews but also the relief of finding a great summer job.  My favourite summer job has been (and always will be) working for York's RED Zone, and guess what? We're hiring!
My first year in the RED Zone!

Back in the day...

In my previous blog I alluded to the fact that my first year transition was, to put it nicely, a little rough.  I don't want to worry any one because it's really not a bad story (I mean, it obviously ends well) but it's probably going to sound familiar to the people who have gone through it and it's something to keep in mind while you're going through it.  Spoiler alert: I came out alright.

You should probably just hire me on the spot

You know when you're applying to a job, and in your head you just KNOW you'd be good at it and you should have the job? And then you sit down in front of your computer to do your application and cover letter and everything, and you start:
"I'm writing in regards to your posting for RED Zone Student Ambassador. I feel that I would be an excellent addition to your team and this is why..." and then you just stop. And you just think...
